Quick Tip!
Don’t confuse the GOST model with a SWOT analysis. The GOST technique drives strategy, whereas a SWOT analysis evaluates internal and external factors affecting a strategy.

Filling out the GOST Template

The model is broken down into its four sections along with What, How, High Level, and Detail Level.
Goals
To fill out the Goals section, think about the outcome you want your strategy to achieve. Overall, this section needs to be measurable and general in nature (Ex. Increase engagement with alumni).
Objectives
To fill out the Objectives section, you want to build upon your goals and focus on the specific and more detailed ways to achieve your goals. Ask yourself: “Which metrics should I apply to the goal?” (Increase alumni engagement by 3% on all social media platforms).
Strategy
To fill out the Strategy section, think about how you can achieve your goals. Coming up with these strategies will give you a general path to reach your ultimate goal (Ex. Make more posts targeted towards alumni).
Tactics
To fill out the Tactics section, focus on specific ways to execute your strategy. Tactics should be the steps you will take to accomplish your goal. When filling out this section, focus on the specific ways and the actions that need to happen in order to reach your strategy (Ex. Interact/post weekly with alumni, pay attention to any user-generated content).
